It also turns out that another problem with the player was a bug in the ROMs - something they KNEW abou but wouldn't fix (so what else is new?). Basically, I've done what I can to stay away from Sony since then, and I bought a Denon DCD 1500II with which I've been VERY happy and have had no problems. I'd buy a portable CD player, TV or LV player from them, but I've been scared away from their home CD players.
