Ideally, the product should have the following: o standard query language (SQL would be OK, too ;-)) o support for a wide variety of communications protocols (SNA, DECnet, TCP/IP, etc.) o support for a number of host environments (including MVS, VM, VMS, UNIX, OS/2) o extractors for a variety of databases and file structures (DB2, SQL/DS, Rdb, ORACLE, INGRESS, VSAM, etc.) o the ability to route and queue requests between networks If anyone knows of such a beast, I'd like to hear about it. 'Star' products from the database vendors usually don't qualify, because they assume a heterogeneous hardware/homogeneous software environment (i.e., the DBMS must exist on all the hosts).
