Smail 3.1 is in alpha test. Once it is deemed stable enough it will be released for beta testing as smail 3.2. Smail 3.1 can be used as a wholesale replacement for sendmail. It has full TCP/IP SMTP support and can also speak "uusmtp". It doesn't have the configurability of sendmail, but it's also infinitely easier to maintain. I represent myself, a satisfied alpha tester. I do not speak for the authors of smail 3.1, who are on vacation last I heard and would certainly shudder to read this simplistic explanation.
