Thanks for all the responces to the problem of tip resetting the modem to answer
on the first ring, The following was a solution suggested by Ron Hitchens:

	Well, I did not have a binary editor on unix, so I copied tip binary
to a PC, used Norton's utilities and made the above change, and copied it
back to unix (setting the correct permisions) and it worked.
