When printing an EXECUTIONER file to disk from Appleworks try setting the
characters per inch to 17, then the platen width to 24. This doesn't seem to
mess the file up. Don't mess with the  margins.
As to FreeWriter, my biggest problem is that it disconnects slot 5 on my
//C. Even when I exit the program and run something else I can't access my
unidisk until I reboot.
