Keywords: help wanted Message-ID: <383@volvovd.volvo.se> Date: 4 Aug 88 13:35:21 GMT Reply-To: peter@volvo.UUCP (Peter Hkansson) Distribution: comp.sys.ibm.pc Organization: Volvo Data AB, Goteborg, Sweden Lines: 13 machine ? I am writeing a utility package to communicate with a FANUC NC machine. As part of that i have to emulate a tape reader controlled by X/ON X/OFF characters. How do i do to, while transmitting characters, be able to react on received X/OFF's ?. If i read one character , then if none is sent, a time out seems to appear after about 1 sec. returning a NULL byte. This behavior is not documented (as i know) but at least it prevents my program to hang forever. What i really want is a way to catch incoming characters as they arrive. In unix a child could be set up, in VMS an AST could be used, both from C. It is really possible (kermit does it), please give me a clue how. Thanks an advance Peter HPkanson /Volvo/data sweden/
