Perhaps it's simply running on the ragged edge of available-memory on your Mac Plus, and is running out (and bombing ungracefully) after planet #1 if your cache is using any substantial amount of memory. Check out some of the higher-numbered planets (either by getting to them in the game, or with the galaxy editor).
