Instead of using the serial ports, wn hy not use the printer ports?  A
lot of systems today have extra printer ports, which are parallel out ports.

The design would need some extra lines, tho - you would need to select which
registers you need.

The extra lines coulb d be faked by s a simple addition
of a latch and some logic - say, bit 7 high 
would be the latch/data e select lines.
