thanks to everyone who responded to my request!  i hadn't realized
it was so simple...

the quickest solution is to load .emacs into a buffer and use
the command "eval-current-buffer".  that pointed me directly to
the offending line(s).

thanks too for all of the version info.  our version (17.62.9)
seems to be pretty ancient...now on to the update trail....
