OK, my tape story. This one involves a careful user whose operators religiously cleaned the tape drives with lavish quantities of alcohol every morning, just to prevent trouble. Nevertheless, this user had terrible problems with intermittent tape errors. After much pain, we (vendor & customer) figured it out: the alcohol dissolved the binder on one particular brand of tape (name withheld because they fixed that problem about 10 years ago). See, the first tapes used that day would flake out just a little...
