I'm subscribed through listserv@ndsuvm1, There are occassional timing problems between the INTERNET/BITNET gateways (observed at both CUNYVM and MITVMA at least) that cause duplication of mail (occurs in BOTH directions through the gateways). The problem is more or less random (more likely to affect longer messages). The gatemasters are aware of the problem, but getting it fixed is nontrivial. The gateway software used on BITNET has a number of shortcomings. Perhaps the next version (vaporware) will have a fix for the problem. Rumor also has it that major hardware upgrades are budgeted for MILNET. Whether installation of new equipment on the other side affects the problem remains to be seen. For the time being, the occasional duplicates remain an unavoidable "feature" of subscribing to Internet based lists on BITNET.
