Boot the machine from floppy, with a disk containing the latest system and finder and a program that lets you delete files, like MacTools, ResEdit etc. Make this program the startup application. This should launch you into the program, and the mac II's hard disk should appear. Proceed to DELETE the desktop on the Mac II. Sometimes rebuilding the desktop is not enough. You won't lose anything that isn't already on the harddisk, maybe some icons from programs that you have trashed, maybe a few comments, but after deleting the desktop, then quiting and allowing the system build a new one should return your hard disk into working order.
