    A few months ago, I proposed XReadBitmapFileData() and submitted
    the (trivial) code to athena.

For the record, the MIT X Consortium is not part of Project Athena.

    Anyone from athena care to comment? 

Probably not, but I will.  It will not be part of Xlib in R3.
It or something like it probably will be somewhere on the
MIT distribution.
