[ eat this, buddy ]

I was wondering if anyone had the source for, or reference to, a set of 
regular expression searching routines that allow forward and, hopefully,
backward searching, although just forward would be ok.  I don't just
want a "does this string match this expression" routine, but a "what is
the first occurance of this expression in this <?>"  where the <?> 
represents a stream of text that I provide one character at a time
( probably by specifying a routine for the package to that behaves like
  getc() )

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
