Is there an Gnu Emacs Emacs-Lisp programming manual (either tutorial or reference)? The on-line help is useful, but it conveys neither an overview of the available Emacs-Lisp functionality nor Emacs-Lisp programming techniques. I know Lisp, but I still feel a bit lost when writing Emacs-Lisp code. Please post a response so all may benefit. 2. From Gnu Emacs' on-line help: "Turning on text-mode calls the value of the variable text-mode-hook, if that value is non-nil." So just how does one set the "value" of the variable text-mode-hook? The printed manual and the on-line help do not specify this. I've tried (setq text-mode-hook 'my-own-function) but this does not work (and it seemed the most logical way).
