I discovered more info on my friend's AMDEK monitor problem.
Funny you should mention the STB board; that's what he has... I sat in
while he booted, and it looked like page feed control codes were being 
mapped into graphics characters.  I popped a CGA card in and the problem
did not recur; (there goes my 'bad disk' thoery...).  I will ask him to
keep track of exact error messages/behavior when he tries to run on the
Epson.
