You might look into 2400 baud MNP modems (I don't have MNP, but it would be
neat if I did...)  Modems with MNP are being made by companies such as Acer,
Aiwa, Omron, and US Robotics.  However, they are somewhat more expensive
than regular 2400 baud modems (most of the Japanese ones cost about the
equivalent of 375 U.S. dollars and have MNP level 4 or 5 error correction
built in).
