While I have not tested the idea (no serial printer), a variable UNFORM in
the environment area should serve the same purpose with only a little mod to
SEL.BAT.

Have your AUTOEXEC file SET UNFORM to 0 or 1 as appropriate for your config-
uration, then test for the content of the variable.
