Is it possible to create a text widget whose size is measured in characters
instead of pixels?

I've tried getting making a subroutine that finds the font size and then
calculates the size in pixels.  Unfortunately, I can't get the font size
until after the widget is realize and by then the window manager won't let
me resize the window.
