Message-ID: <18270@mirror.TMC.COM> Date: 25 Sep 88 23:20:16 GMT Reply-To: mguyott@prism.TMC.COM (Marc Guyott) Organization: Mirror Systems, Cambridge Mass. Lines: 103 It has been 2 weeks since I posted the "call for discussion" for the new newsgroup comp.windows.ms. There was a good deal of activity during the first week of the discussion period, I will list examples of the most popular responses that I received at the end of this posting, but the discussions seems to have dropped off in the last week. This indicates to me that it is time to call for votes. However, before I make an official call for votes I want to remind people of a couple of things. I have already received votes from many people (all for the creation of the newsgroup). However, THESE VOTES DO NOT COUNT! Votes can not be counted unless they are emailed to the address given in the call for votes AFTER the call for votes has been posted. I am asking all of the people who have already sent me votes to please resend your vote to the address posted in the call for votes after the call for votes appears in news.groups. The next thing I wanted to say is that the call for votes will ONLY APPEAR IN NEWS.GROUPS so please watch this news group as the call for votes should appear very shortly after this announcement. The last thing I wanted to say is that in order for this attempt to create comp.windows.ms to succeed, I must receive 100 YES votes more than the number of NO votes that I receive. This is a significant number of votes so if you have the least bit of interest in seeing this news group created please vote. Here is a summary of some of the more popular opinions I received during the discussion period for comp.windows.ms. From: blair@enint.Wichita.NCR.COM (Brian Lair) Some have expressed a desire for a more generic "comp.windows.ibm" newsgroup (to include GEM and OS/2), but I disagree. That seems to be the charter of comp.windows.misc, and the whole idea of creating this new group is to further break down the discussions into more specific subject areas. -- Brian R. I like X, but hey, I *use* MS. -- John Allen ======================================================================= NetExpress Communications, Inc. usenet: uunet!netxcom!jallen 1953 Gallows Road, Suite 300 phone: (703) 749-2238 Vienna, Virginia, 22180 telex: 901 976 ======================================================================= From: barnett@vdsvax.steinmetz.ge.com (Bruce G. Barnett) >comp.windows.ibm.pc Remember that one company has announced NeWS for OS/2. Maybe comp.windows.ms is a better choice. -- Bruce G. Barnett uunet!steinmetz!barnett From: pcb@usl.usl.edu (P.C. Bahrs) I think that the news group comp.windows.ms is most appropriate. If enough interest occurs then further groups such as comp.windows.os2 and comp.windows.gem should be added. From: shel@cfi.COM (shel) I fully agree that a comp.windows.ms would be a good idea. With IBM's move to pm in the future there are more and more of us trying to make some sense out of MS Windows and a discussion group would be of great value -- Sheldon Laube, The Consumer Financial Institute, Waltham, MA 617-899-6500 {decvax!yale|allegra|ihnp4|ucbvax!cbosgd}!ima!cfisun!shel shel@CFI.COM From: Nicholas Solntseff At the expense of some duplication (especially of more generic issues common to all small-workstation-based systems -- Mac, GEM, MS Windows), I favour separating groups into ... ms , ... . mac , ... gem, etc. Nick Solntseff (416) 525-9140 xtn 3443. ---- ...
