I don't think you really want to start this line of argument; I mean, if we are talking about wasted effort, there are many who would agree that persuing aggressive implementations of certain processor architectures is plenty wasted (please believe me, I don't necessarily mean the 32000). Besides, that quadbyte string compare isn't dhrystone in microcode, there ain't no microcode! :-) :-) :-) (by traditional definitions anyway). If SPARC or MIPS or somebody takes over the market completely, then what effort was wasted and what wasn't? Let's all have a nice day.
