If all you need is a "this cable is ok?" answer please don't forget
that many workstations [e.g. Sun and Tektronix] and gateway boxes have some
level of TDR checking included in to either diags or networking software,
it is a common part of many ethernet chip sets.  You don't get to watch a
display and the distances are often rather inaccurate but they will detect
shorts and open cables and hence answer the simple questions.
