I came in to this a bit late, so I'm not sure what machine types we're
talking about, but on Suns in particular rlogin has an 'undocumented option'
( -8 ) (<- that's a 'minus eight', not a 'smiley face') which gives a full
eight bit connection. I've no idea if this is a BSDism, a SYS Vism or Sun 
specific, but it's been there at least since SunOs 3.2.
