This *may* not > be true on your machine, but I'm sure it is on mine. :-( I came in to this a bit late, so I'm not sure what machine types we're talking about, but on Suns in particular rlogin has an 'undocumented option' ( -8 ) (<- that's a 'minus eight', not a 'smiley face') which gives a full eight bit connection.
