Not exactly. Both are derived from version 7. True some of Berkeleyisms have found their way back into the BTL research version, but there are still philisophical differences. For example, see "Program Design in the UNIX Environment", R. Pike and B.W. Kernighan, AT&T Bell Laboratories Technical Journal 62(8), October 1984, pp. 1595-1605.
