It is a historical curiousity that is still around because when I wrote the original code, the IP fragmentation code of most systems didnt work worth a damn. So, I made the MTU 1006 so it wouldn't fragment going through an IMP. If I didn't have an IMP, I probably would have made it 1534 (or whatever the ethernet is) --rick
