(I used to download uuencoded files from Portal with carriage returns turned on, so I'd end up with 60k files that had a ^M on every line. The s// command in Z is heinously slow, but has worked for me every time. In fact, the first time I tried it, I ended up resetting the machine because I thought it had crashed, and I didn't want to continue because the machine was horribly slow. )
