Ray,

    IBM does indeed make a backlit screen for their convertibles. ( Thats
whats typing this message now). You have their model 001, and they introduced
the model 002 about 6-8 months later. 
    They do have an upgrade kit so you can turn yours into a model 002. It
consists os a different power supply, screen and I think an internal card
change. I do not have any pricing or parts information, but I would
suggest you call the nearest local IBM office for details. I too have found
most local stores lacking in assistance when it comes to IBM part numbers.
