It might be plausible to consider asking AT&T to release the 9th Edition
commercially if one could convince *all* of their licensees (including
DEC, IBM, and a few other companies) to in turn convince *all* of their
customers that this is the right thing to do.  What AT&T really doesn't
want is to support more than one version of Unix themselves (independant
of the fact that they'd rather the other variants all went away).

What would this take?  My estimate is a few tens of billions of dollars.
