Yes.  I have not had any problem with 1.44 Meg disks in any version
after 2.2.2.  In fact, the dos utilities even understand MS-DOS
filesystems on these disks.  I can't say for sure what problem you
are experiencing.  It might be helpful to point out that 1.44 Meg
disks have an extra sensing hole in the corner adjacent to the write
protect hole in the back.
