My previous plea for help after two days' trying to get 18.51
running on my new office machine was rather hasty.  I tried to
recompile it with C_ALLOCA and it now seems to be working OK.
Obviously the alloca supplied in -lPW and that in alloca.s are
both broken for the particular machine I'm on.  It was when
sdb was unable to even do a stack trace I smelt a rat...

So, emacs' portability is proven and I feel far happier in my new
job with an editor I can trust!
