Sorry to have bothered you folks.  Somehow, my .newsrc got pieces of
itself duplicated and stuck back in in two different places.  gnus
used the second entry when reading, then updated the first entry.  I
*still* don't know how that happened, but it doesn't seem to be gnus' fault.
