In discussions of manipulated farm animals one sometimes hear
references to pigs with an extra vertebra, "so that the farmers can
get an extra pair of spare ribs out of the pigs". 
Is this true, and how has this extra vertebra gotten there (since I've
heard the story since long before the advent of recombinant
DNA-technology)?
