In teaching more traditional programming languages at the University of 
British Columbia, I covered 6 in one semester (to seniors who already knew
two languages).  I would think that a course should not be based on a single
language, but on techniques and types of applications, on a class of languages
(doing a comparative study), or showing the variety of concepts available
in different languages.
