An interesting article appeard in the October (maybe November, anyhow, the
most recent) issue of IEEE Spectrum. In that article the technique of using
fractal equations to compress images was investigated. Compression ratios
of up to 10,000:1 were achieved. I am sure that this article can point you
to additional references.
