   I know of several ways of connecting appletak (localtalk!)  to ethernet,
   but does anyone out there know of any work done on connecting over x25,
   either as localtalk--x25--localtalk or localtalk--x25--ethernet


While working at a dealer recently I drew up a network to interconnect five
localtalk networks around Australia. I don't know if it went in but heres the
configuration.

Remote connection to a LocalTalk network can be achieved with a NetSerial from
Shiva Corp (USA) or an Rserver from Solana (USA).

The NetSerial sits on LocalTalk with an asynchronous modem (up to 19.2Kbps).
Remote macs can dial into the network and use AppleShare, LaserWriters etc,
just as if they were in the office. LocalTalk Macs can share the modem for
outgoing modem calls. (you can share any serial deveice).

The Rserver is a LocalTalk to LocalTalk bridge. Each LocalTalk requires an
Rserver and modem (up to 19.2Kbps).

To connect via X.25 you replace the modem with an X.25 PAD. The Rserver
software can be configured with a script to play when it wakes up. This script
sets PAD profiles and sets the X.25 destination. Make sure the PAD you use is
easy to configure.

When you want to connect networks, this is what should happen.

        1  User goes to chooser, selects desired LocalTalk network.

        2  Rserver executes script to wake up PAD.

        3  Rserver configures PAD and makes connection to the other end.

At the other end.

        4  PAD answers call and wakes up Rserver.

There you have it. LocalTalk to LocalTalk over x.25.

The actual network designed had to also connect a Netway 1000A (IBM 3274 61C
lookalike) on LocalTalk network to an SNA network in Colorado.

Here we had to multiplex the asynchronous Rserver LocalTalk datastream(s) and
the synchronous Netway SNA datastream and then put it on x.25 to whereever it
wanted to go.

Like I said, someone else is handling the installation now but I believe
Rserver stuff is working while the SNA isn't.
