I know of two: ispell, and correct. I have no idea what the VMS checker does.
correct uses the UN*X dictionary, ispell uses it's own, and "suggests"
the proper spelling.

There is a shell script called 'cn' that tells you how many articles
are unread (uses your .newsrc file). It reports in three columns,
so you can see how many articles are in the first 30 newsgroups
with unread articles.
