I  have been running Windows/286 on an NCR PC-8 (AT-compatible) for about
a month, quite satisfactorily. I gave up on trying to run with expanded
memory (problems during the boot, perhaps similar to yours), and just used
SMARTDrive and extended memory.

I have 2M of RAM (1.5M is extended, NOT expanded)
