They were designed by the engineers that brought out the ST-225 and ST-238. They thought they could improve on the original design. The drives seem to be a good value for the price. The KALOC 330, a 3.5" ST-238 equivalent, has a plated media platter and better seek time than the Seagate drive. The head positioning mechanism is much simpler. I haven't had the drives long enough for a really good evaluation, but my dealer (Media Winchester Ltd.) backs up the products they sell, so I'm not worried.
