On a similar topic , pleerhaps someobody can explain this to me.

When my terminal, or a window on my workstation, is in VT220 mode , the
ESC key transmits ESC [ 2 3 ~. in stead of just ESC.  SSome provision is
apparently made for this in emacs (GNU v18.46.27 under VMS, if you care),
because all my bindings work.  For example, when I type press ESC, I see
ESFC [ 2 3 ~- IN ESC"ESC [ 2 3 ~-" in the minibuffer, whbut when I type x, it "snaps back" to
M-x, despite the fact that I can't find "ESC [ 2 3 ~
