I really have alot of trouble with C-l being bound to `gdb-refresh' in
`gdb-mode'.  I use C-l quite often and I'm continually being confused
by this binding.

How about leaving C-l alone and binding this to C-c C-l instead?  I
don't think this command is so useful that it requires a single
keystroke binding.
