The problem with tex4.c is new. FSF seems to create a bug with every two bugs they fix. This prompts me to make two points. I had started trying with 1.27, which ran the compilation to completion but produced a very badly munged TeX, so 1.29 is a large improvement from that; at least the one error is obvious and easily worked around.
