A probabilistic method is proposed for reading remote clocks in distributed systems subject to unbounded random communication delays. The method enables the achievement of clock synchronization precisions superior to those attainable by previously published clock synchronization algo- rithms. Its use is illustrated by presenting a time service which main- tains externally (and hence, internally) synchronized clocks in the pres- ence of process, communication and clock failures. No prior familiarity with the topic of clock synchronization is assumed. -- Jim Clarke -- Dept. of Computer Science, Univ. of Toronto, Canada M5S 1A4 (416) 978-4058 BITNET,CSNET: clarke@csri.toronto.edu CDNNET: clarke@csri.toronto.cdn UUCP: {allegra, cornell, decvax, linus, utzoo}!utcsri!clarke
