I don't think we could ever stop such public information from ever being misused. The potential for this misuse can happen with any list that you put your name on. It frequently does, with magazine subscription lists, those little product information cards at the end of tech mags, etc. About the only way to stop it (in the case of a magazine subscription) is to tell the distibutor that you do not wish do have your name placed on a distributed mailing list.
