Possibly the single best thing the Ontario government could do for the province's university system is to take some of the basket cases -- "universities" established at the peak of baby-boom enthusiasm, with little or no long-term justification -- out and shoot them. And then encourage the remaining universities to do the same with marginal schools and departments. Most of those places are slowly starving to death anyway; "'twere best 'twere done quickly".
