I'm grateful for your comments. I've just ordered a Bearcat 760XTL scanner from Communication Electronics in Michigan (1-800-USA-SCAN) for $245. I hope that I'm getting first quality at this price. I hope to post a review, perhaps in comparison with the AOR AR2002 my boss plans to get at the end of the year. [By the way, Uniden's service on an RD-9 radar detector (bar graph display went bad) was courteous *and* prompt. I had about a three week turnaround from California. (They fixed the display and tweaked the sensitivity too.) Also, Surface Mount Devices are popping up all over the place now and are a fact of life. Better to learn how to work with them than to curse their existance. They do have very short leads {just about none}, can be of tight quality, and help bring down size and cost. I first saw them on my Philips-made Magnavox 560 CD player about two years ago. (Actually all the micro- redar detectors use them also.)] Accordingly, I very interested in the various mods (400 channel, keyboard overlay, cellular restoration, etc) that can be done on the 760. Because of this, I have started a subscription to Monitoring Times and I'm looking forward to upcoming issues. But starting a subscription now obviously won't get me any of the earlier articles. Pointers to them or any information on mods would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again, Jeff C. Internet: chan@ames.arc.nasa.gov UUCP: ames!chan P. S. Bob: I'm not sure why your mailer had problems, ames is a major uucp and internet node. Perhaps it is the fact that I posted from a different account. I look forward to your net and paper articles. (I thought I'd seen your name somewhere!)
