The disk controller has more to do with whether Minix will work than the drive itself. What controller do you have? Chances are good that it's a Western Digital controller (these are very popular). The XT hard disk driver for Minix 1.2 is much more diplomatic; it will work on more controllers than the 1.1 driver, including the popular WD controllers. And it will plug into the 1.1 kernel as a direct replacement.
