EEPROMs to hold 256K of code would probably be cost prohibitive, but maybe using battery backed CMOS might be workable. Even that much CMOS is sort of expensive. Battery replacement would be no big deal; if the CMOS ever got dumped, you'd only need to reboot from the kickstart to restore normality. The downside is that the nice friendly ever-warm memory could be a potential breeding ground for viruses and worms, etc. --Bill "Thermonuclear what?"
