There is a bug which was found in ftpd recently which allows
one to gain root access to a machine without too much trouble.
Probably what has happened is that the U of Illinois people
have taken their ftpd down for awhile until the fix has
been applied.  The fix is simple and was posted to comp.bugs.
4bsd.ucb-fixes last week.
