I had that problem with a cassette tape deck once.  It turned out that the
"end-of-tape" sensing mechanism was too sensitive.  A fine adjustment by
the dealer fixed it.  (It was relatively new)  I found that running new
tapes through it was more successful than older tapes, until it was fixed.
