If my mailbox window flashes to indicate new mail, I'll look at it, but most of the time I'll stay with the window I'm working in. In a similar vein, when using a Sun I have click-to-type set, because when using non-mouse-oriented things I like to shove the mouse out of the way, and would be very frustrated if that deselected the window.
